Children’s Development and Learning
The Early Years Foundation Stage
Children’s learning and development from birth to five is guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage (Department for Education). Our setting reflects the overarching principles of the statutory framework for the EYFS .
A UNIQUE CHILD – Each child is a unique child who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self assured.
POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS – Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships.
ENABLING ENVIRONMENTS – Children learn and develop well in enabling environments in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between staff, parent’s and carers.
LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT - Children learn and develop at different rates . The EYFS covers the care and education of all children in early years settings.
HOW WE PROVIDE FOR DEVELOPMENT & LEARNING
Children start to learn about the world around them from the moment they are born. The care and education offered by us helps children to do this by providing all of the children with interesting activities and experiences that are appropriate for their age and stage of development. The Early Years foundation stage focuses on seven areas of learning
The Prime areas
The Specific Areas
The Keyperson will observe and track your child’s development in each of these areas and support children to develop the knowledge and skills they need to progress.
Learning through Play
Being active and playing supports young children’s development through doing and talking. This is how children learn to think about the world around them. We use statutory guidance on education programmes to plan and provide opportunities which will help children progress in all areas of learning. We adopt a balance between child led play based on their current interests and activities planned and led by the practitioner.
Characteristics of Effective Learning
We understand that all children engage with people and the environment through the characteristics of effect learning that are described in the EYFS as
We take in to account how a child is learning and provide support to each child to become an effective and motivated learner.
TAPESTRY ONLINE JOURNALS
We use an online system to upload observations, photo’s etc of your child’s activities and development at pre school. Please see a separate form regarding your permission for us to use Tapestry for your child.
We complete a Progress check for all children aged 2. We also complete summative assessments to chart development on all children three times per year. Your key person can tell you more about this.
The Keyperson System
Your child will be allocated a Keyperson before they start with us. You will be able to meet them prior to starting. The Keyperson takes a special interest in your child and will deal with their care and wellbeing, learning and development. They will work closely with you and if you have any issues or concerns your Keyperson will be your first point of contact. All Keypersons have a “Buddy” who will take on the Keyperson role in cases of absence.
Ratio’s
We pride ourselves on always working above staff to child ratio requirements to ensure that we are able to offer each child high quality care and experiences.
SNACKS
We provide a variety of snacks throughout the week, including fruit, crackers, toast, cheese, yoghurts etc. We provide milk or water at snack and provide children with a water bottle for use throughout the day.
CLOTHING
We provide lots of messy activities including mud kitchen, sandpit, paint, water play , gloop etc. While we do encourage children to wear aprons we cannot guarantee that children will come home clean so older clothing is preferable. Please provide weather appropriate clothing. ie sunhats for hot weather, warm coats for cold weather, etc. Please name all outer clothing as these are easily mislaid. Clothing that is easy to manage makes using the bathroom etc easier for children
